    Despite the increasing use of electronic payments, currency retains an important role in the payments system of every country. Two aspects of currency usage drive currency design worldwide: deterring counterfeiting and making paper currency accessible to the visually impaired. Further, among the world's currencies, only U.S. banknotes are widely owned and used in transactions outside their country of issue (although the euro also has some external circulation). In this article, we compare and contrast major currencies and their design features. We conclude that the designs of the two most widely used currencies in the world-the U.S. dollar and the euro-have successfully deterred counterfeiting; data on other currencies are not public. We also conclude that, among the world's major currencies, U.S. banknotes have the fewest features to assist the visually impaired.Paper money design ; Coinage ; Counterfeits and counterfeiting

In this article, the authors compare and contrast trade-offs among currency design features, including those primarily intended to deter counterfeiting and those to improve usability by the visually impaired. The authors conclude that periodic changes in the design of currency are an important aspect of counterfeit deterrence and that currency designers worldwide generally have been successful in efforts to deter counterfeiting. At the same time, currency designers have sought to be sensitive to the needs of the visually impaired. Although trade-offs among goals sometimes have forced compromises, new technologies promise banknotes that are both more difficult to counterfeit and more accessible to the visually impaired.     Real output in Switzerland: new estimates for 1914-47

    In this article, Felix A, Andrist, Richard G. Anderson, and Marcela Williams provide, for the first time, an estimate of the real gross domestic product of Switzerland between 1914 and 1947. The estimate is obtained from published data on three other measures of Swiss economic activity during this period: net national product, industrial production, and the transport volume of Swiss railroads. These underlying series closely represent the economic growth of Switzerland; but, they also seem unreasonably volatile as proxy measures of total production, and hence, are filtered by moving averages. Although such smoothing might reduce the accuracy of the estimates, comparisons to U.S. data suggest any such loss is small.Gross national product ; Switzerland

    Phosphorylated MARCKS: A novel centrosome component that also defines a peripheral subdomain of the cortical actin cap in mouse eggs

    AbstractMARCKS (myristoylated alanine-rich C-kinase substrate) is a major substrate for protein kinase C (PKC), a kinase that has multiple functions during oocyte maturation and egg activation, for example, spindle function and cytoskeleton reorganization. We examined temporal and spatial changes in p-MARCKS localization during maturation of mouse oocytes and found that p-MARCKS is a novel centrosome component based its co-localization with pericentrin and γ-tubulin within microtubule organizing centers (MTOCs). Like pericentrin, p-MARCKS staining at the MI spindle poles was asymmetric. Based on this asymmetry, we found that one end of the spindle was preferentially extruded with the first polar body. At MII, however, the spindle poles had symmetrical p-MARCKS staining. p-MARCKS also was enriched in the periphery of the actin cap overlying the MI or MII spindle to form a ring-shaped subdomain. Because phosphorylation of MARCKS modulates its actin crosslinking function, this localization suggests p-MARCKS functions as part of the contractile apparatus during polar body emission. Our finding that an activator of conventional and novel PKC isoforms did not increase the amount of p-MARCKS suggested that an atypical isoform was responsible for MARCKS phosphorylation. Consistent with this idea, immunostaining revealed that the staining patterns of p-MARCKS and the active form of the atypical PKC ζ/λ isoform(s) were very similar. These results show that p-MARCKS is a novel centrosome component and also defines a previously unrecognized subdomain of the actin cap overlying the spindle

    Data for life cycle assessment of legume biorefining for alcohol

    Benchmarking the environmental sustainability of alcohol produced from legume starch against alcohol produced from cereal grains requires considering of crop production, nutrient cycling and use of protein-rich co-products via life cycle assessment. This article describes the mass balance flows behind the life cycle inventories for gin produced from wheat and peas (Pisum sativum L.) in an associated article summarising the environmental footprints of wheat- and pea-gin [1], and also presents detailed supplementary results. Activity data were collected from interviews with actors along the entire gin value chain including a distillery manager and ingredient and packaging suppliers. Important fertiliserand animal-feed substitution effects of co-product use were derived using detailed information and models on nutrient flows and animal feed composition, along with linear optimisation modelling. Secondary data on environmental burdens of specific materials and processes were obtained from the Ecoinvent v3.4 life cycle assessment database. This article provides a basis for further quantitative evaluation of the environmental sustainability of legume-alcohol value chains

    Industrialised agriculture is heavily reliant upon synthetic nitrogen fertilisers and imported protein feeds, posing environmental and food security challenges. Increasing the cultivation of leguminous crops that biologically fix nitrogen and provide high protein feed and food could help to address these challenges. We report on the innovative use of an important leguminous crop, pea (Pisum sativum L.), as a source of starch for alcohol (gin) production, yielding protein-rich animal feed as a co-product. We undertook life cycle assessment (LCA) to compare the environmental footprint of 1 L of packaged gin produced from either 1.43 kg of wheat grain or 2.42 kg of peas via fermentation and distillation into neutral spirit. Allocated environmental footprints for pea-gin were smaller than for wheat-gin across 12 of 14 environmental impact categories considered. Global warming, resource depletion, human toxicity, acidification and terrestrial eutrophication footprints were, respectively, 12%, 15%, 15%, 48% and 68% smaller, but direct land occupation was 112% greater, for pea-gin versus wheat-gin. Expansion of LCA boundaries indicated that co-products arising from the production of 1 L of wheat- or pea-gin could substitute up to 0.33 or 0.66 kg soybean animal feed, respectively, mitigating considerable greenhouse gas emissions associated with land clearing, cultivation, processing and transport of such feed. For pea-gin, this mitigation effect exceeds emissions from gin production and packaging, so that each L of bottled pea gin avoids 2.2 kg CO2 eq. There is great potential to scale the use of legume starches in production of alcoholic beverages and biofuels, reducing dependence on Latin American soybean associated with deforestation and offering considerable global mitigation potential in terms of climate change and nutrient leakage — estimated at circa 439 Tg CO2 eq. and 8.45 Tg N eq. annually
